RYA Competent Crew Practical Course
The aim of the course is to introduce the complete beginner to cruise under sail, thereby enabling them to be an active crew member. This will be achieved having completed 5 days, 100 miles at sea in tidal waters and 4 night hours.
This 5 day hands-on practical course provides confidence and knowledge in sailing a modern cruising yacht. In a relaxed and fun environment you will participate in all aspects of yachting including; helming, sail trim, mooring & safety. The aim is to become a valuable crew member on a cruising yacht.
RYA Competent Crew Syllabus The Competent Crew Course is intended to introduce the complete beginner to cruising and to teach personal safety, seamanship and helmsmanship to the level required to be a useful member of the crew of a cruising yacht.
Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a Boat, her rigging and sails Sufficient knowledge to understand orders given concerning the sailing and day-to-day running of the boat.
Sail Handling Bending on, setting, reefing and handling of sails. Use of sheets and halyards and their associated winches.
Ropework Handling ropes including coiling, stowing, securing to cleats and single and double bollards. Handling warps. Ability to tie the following knots and to know their correct use: figure of eight, clove hitch, rolling hitch, bowline, round turn and two half hitches, single and double sheet bend, reef knot.
Fire Precautions and Fighting Awareness of the hazards of fire and the precautions necessary to prevent fire. Know action to be taken in event of fire.
Personal Safety Equipment Understands and complies with rules for the wearing of safety harnesses, lifejackets and personal buoyancy aids.
Man Overboard Understands action to be taken to recover a man overboard.
Distress Signals Can operate distress flares and knows on what occasions distress flares should be used.
Manners and Customs Understands the ordinary practice of seamen and yachtsmen with regard to: use of burgees and ensigns, prevention of unnecessary noise or disturbance in harbour including courtesies to other craft berthed alongside.
Rules of the Road Is able to keep an efficient look out at sea.
Dinghies Understands and complies with the loading rules. Is able to handle a dinghy under oars.
Meteorology Awareness of forecasting services and knowledge of the Beaufort scale.
Seasickness Working efficiency unaffected/partially affected/severely affected by seasickness.
Helmsmanship and Sailing Understands the theory of sailing and can steer and trim sails on all points of sailing. Can steer a compass course, under sail and power.
General Duties Has carried out general duties satisfactorily on deck and below decks in connection with the daily routine of the vessel.
Pre-course experience None but we recommend familiarising yourself with parts of a yacht, points of sail and knots
Ability after course You will be a useful member of crew who understands the workings of the yacht and can confidently help out on board casting off, under sail and mooring up.
Duration 5 days and 5 nights living aboard
Dates 5 day - Thursday pm to Tuesday pm or 2 days plus 3 days - weekly consecutive weekends, Friday pm to Sunday pm and Thursday pm to Sunday pm or vice versa please call for individual start dates. or 3 2 day weekends
