RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course

This course gives a basic understanding of navigation and safety afloat which is essential for anyone skippering or crewing a small boat at sea (Sail or Power). It forms a solid foundation on which to build your theory knowledge so that your time afloat can be spent safely. Esssential Navigation and Seamanship Course is available on line, using RYA Interactive, so you can learn at your own pace, in your home environment and when you want whilst retaining instructor access. RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Theory Course

A sound grasp of the principles of navigation, providing the underpinning knowledge and understanding to get the best out of your Global Postioning System (GPS) or Chartplotter. This five day course (excl home study) covers both traditional and electronic techniques. A real must for RYA Competent Crew wanting acquire all the theory required to move upward to Day Skipper Practical in order look after a boat themselves.

RYA Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Theory Course

Advanced Navigation and Meterology is needed for Coastal Skippers to poccess the theoretical knowledge needed to Skipper a yacht on Coastal Cruises. They do not necessarily have the experience needed to undertake longer passages. The depth of theoretical knowledge and understanding together with the application of this knowledge increases from Coastal Skipper to Yachtmaster. This is essential theory prior to taking the Coastal Skipper Practical Course over five days (excl home study) which needs to be fully understood and be capable of being demonstrated in real situations.

RYA Short One Day Courses

We offer RYA short courses too (just one day) and those on offer are by arrangement which include:

  • Very High Frequency (VHF) Short Range, Digital Selective Calling (DSC). This is the only leagally enforeable course which is essential for all those wishing to operate a radio whilst afloat. This is the syllabus. Before taking this course we recommend completing the free RYA Interactive VHF Pre Course Assessment - 'Get ready for your course'.
  • International Certificate of Competence (ICC) direct assessment for those wanting to cruise or charter abroad. This is the syllabus.
  • CEVNI training to obtain an endorsement of your ICC to cover Inland European Waterways Cruising is mandatory. The syllabus comprises signs, rules and procedures for navigating the European inland waterways and are all included within the CEVNI code and these apply to pleasure craft on the inland waterways of Europe, which in places are heavily utilised by commercial traffic which are all expected to know and follow the CEVNI code. Knowing and abiding by the these regulations is the best way to protect yourself and your boat within European inland waterways. Try the assessment free here
